🪐 Our four football focuses this weekend – Futaa

July 25, 2020

The Premier League will reach a dramatic conclusion this weekend as the Champions League race is resolved and one out of Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Watford escapes the dreaded drop.

There’s also a French Cup final to savour tonight. Here are four football themes we won’t be missing this weekend from around Europe.

🇫🇷🏆 PSG vs Saint-Étienne in the CDF final

Neymar & the gang have been scoring goals for fun in friendly action. They put nine past Le Havre and followed it up with a 7-0 hammering of Waasland Beveren and then notched a modest 4-0 win over Celtic. Neymar scored four times in three games, while Kylian Mbappé, Mauro Icardi & Pablo Sarabia got three each. Tonight they’re back in competitive action in the Coupe de France final against a Saint-Étienne side whose key defender William Saliba has left for Arsenal.PSG’s attacking 4-2-2-2 formationshould be an interesting prospect.

🔥 Goals expected in AC Milan vs Atalanta

95 goals scored in 35 Serie A games this season make Atalanta one of Europe’s new darling teams. They’re sitting third in Serie A and have a tantalizing Champions League quarterfinal date with PSG in August, but on the immediate horizon is a visit to the San Siro. The last three meetings between AC Milan and Atalanta have all featured at least four goals, so it should be a treat.

🏃🏾‍♂️ Premier League top-four race

It couldn’t really be set up any better. Brendan Rodgers’Foxes need to win against Man Unitedon the final day to secure their passage into the Champions League next season. A draw would be enough, too, ifChelsea loses at home to Wolves. Nuno Espirito Santo’s visitors to Stamford Bridge have their eyes on sixth place and won’t make life easy for Frank Lampard’s young charges. A point will be enough for the Blues to dine at Europe’s top table next season and the same can be said for Manchester United against Leicester. Twists and turns are more or less guaranteed.

🦁 One of three teams to escape the drop

Aston Villa’s win over Arsenal has given them a fighting chance of escaping relegation to the Championship. Two of Villa, Bournemouth & Watford will go down with Dean Smith’s side only needing to match or betterWatford’s result away to Arsenalbut their assignment is a tricky one away to an in-form and free-flowing West Ham side that’s playing with the freedom of a team enjoying its football. It’s likely that the picture will change throughout Sunday afternoon and it’s rather unlikely that Villans, Cherries & Hornets fans will have any fingernails left.

We can’t wait for all of the drama to unfold. For now, there’s the intriguing prospect of seeing Paris Saint-Germain back in competitive action.
