Arsenal continue to be strongly linked with a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey ahead of the summer window and Guillem Balague has given an update in their bid to land the Ghanaianon YouTube.

Partey, 26, has been on Arsenal’s radar for months –as per The Star– and it has also been reported that the powerhouse midfielder has told friends that he wants to join The Gunners. He has an exit clause worth £44.5million.

However, it remains to be seen how much Arsenal will be willing to spend in the coming months given the financial restraints of the global health crisis. Mikel Arteta wants steel in midfield, but they may be unable to afford Partey.

Sky Sports and BBC Sport expert Balague claimed during a Q&A session on his official YouTube channel that Atletico Madrid want Partey to sign a new deal to remove his release clause – but that Partey is refusing to sign.

“What I am hearing, he has a buyout clause of €50m, and Atletico would like him to sign a new contract,”Balague said.“But he is not signing a new contract, that is as much as I can tell you.

“Has there been contact? There was a very clear possibility of him moving to England last summer. Spurs, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all enquired. That is as much as we can say.”

TBR’s view –  If Partey joins, who leaves?

Lucas Torreira’s agent has spoken honestly about the possibility of the Uruguayan returning to Serie A just tow years after he left Sampdoria to join Arsenal, following his impressive performances at the 2018 World Cup.

Matteo Guendouzi has gone from looking like a real talent to struggling last season, Dani Ceballos is almost certainly returning to Real Madrid and Granit Xhaka is still recovering from his spat with the supporters against Palace.

With Partey coming in, the chances are that Xhaka will lose his place in the side given he is probably the most similar of Arsenal’s current options to Partey. But we will see.
