Mario Andretti is already a racing legend. Many would say he’s THE racing legend, actually.

But, he’ll put that moniker to the test on Saturday as he competes in The Race Legends Trophy series.

Andretti, who is 80 years old, is part of a star-studded field that will participate in a simulated race on a virtual Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The actual Indianapolis 500 was scheduled for Sunday, but was another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andretti, who resides in Bushkill Township, won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969. A four-time IndyCar Series champion, he is the only driver in motorsports history to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 and the Formula One World Championship.

Despite his incomparable resume, Andretti isn’t seasoned when it comes to racing simulators and will be making his esports debut this weekend. He indicated as much when confirming his participation in the Legends Trophy event on Twitter.

“I’m in,” Andretti wrote. ” … I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. Trying to learn as quickly as possible. It’s been a long time since I was a rookie. I’ll just commit and hope I’m competitive.”

The race, which is scheduled for noon Saturday and will be availableto watch on YouTube, will feature seven Indy 500 winners: Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Helio Castroneves, Gil de Ferran, Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan.
