One of Celtic’s best performers in the4-1win over Hamilton on Sunday was defender Stephen Welsh, who made his first-team debut in the game.
The centre-back didn’t put a foot wrong in the game, and was arguably Celtic’s best defender on the day.
However, Jozo Simunovic, who missed the win over Hamilton, is back in contention for Celtic’s trip to Motherwell on Wednesday night.
“Simunovic will be in the squad” Celtic boss Neil Lennon said, as quoted by theHerald.
Despite that, Lennon hasn’t ruled out further game time for Welsh, as he gave the player plenty of praise in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Motherwell game.
“He’s still part of the plans” Lennon said, in a video on Celtic’s YouTube channel.
“He was excellent”
“I thought he was excellent. I thought he was faultless. For a debut, that’s as good a debut as you’ll see. We’re absolutely delighted with him” the Hoops boss concluded.
Welsh’s display against Hamilton leaves the Celtic boss with a difficult decision to make with regard to his starting line-up for the Motherwell game.
Upcoming fixture would be a test for the player
A trip to Motherwell will be a bigger test for Welsh than a game against Hamilton, you would imagine. However, if you are picking players on form then he must keep his place in the team.
It remains to be seen if Welsh will start against Motherwell. However, his performance against Hamilton shows that there is a player there who can be trusted when called upon.
Hopefully if he doesn’t feature against Motherwell he returns to the side for the Scottish Cup tie against Clyde on Sunday. That will be a different kind of test for Welsh, but it is another one that you would expect the player to pass with flying colours.
