Harry Maguire has apologised for Manchester United’s performance against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Red Devils handed Steve Bruce his first victory in23 attemptsagainst them at St James’ Park in a game that was so utterly void of quality, determination and passion that you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a pre-season friendly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might not be innocent, but his players certainly haven’t helped him on his journey to becoming statistically the worst manager in the club’s illustrious history.

The Norwegian has awin ratioof 47.5% and welcomes Liverpool to Old Trafford in the next round of Premier League fixtures after the international break.

Unitedhave failed to win a single game away from home in the top flight since they beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 27 February. The Eagles returned the favour earlier this term with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

And while Solskjaer will take the majority of flak, players like Maguire have to look at themselves as fundamental elements of the club’s ongoing demise. Especially if they’re the most expensive in their respective departments, as thesummer signingis.

Sadly, we’re not sure empty words will be much comfort for a global fanbase that is mulling over the prospect of a bottom half finish this term, and even less so when they come two days after the game.
