Furious fans have taken to social media to criticise the decision to send off West Brom striker Dwight Gayle during the Championship Play-Off semi-final at Villa Park.
With mere minutes of normal time remaining, Gayle was given a second yellow for a late challenge on Jed Steer to round off an uncomfortable afternoon for the Baggies at the home of their bitter rivals.
Jack Grealish inspiredAston Villa‘s comeback as a late show against West Brom put them on the brink of another Wembley final.
The midfielder set up Conor Hourihane’s leveller and won the penalty for Tammy Abraham to convert andearn a slender 2-1 advantage in the first leg of their Sky Bet Championship play-off semi final.
The goals came inside 202 seconds as the Baggies imploded in the final 15 minutes and had Gayle sent off for a second yellow card late on.
The on-loan Newcastle man willmiss Tuesday’s return leg at the Hawthornshaving scored a first-half opener after seizing on Glenn Whelan’s mistake.
However, some fans believe the sending off was harsh as Gayle was merely trying to get on the end of James Morrison’s cross.
The 28-year-old was running at such speed and was so desperate to get onto the cross his momentum carried him into the opposition goalkeeper.
And some fans were furious when Graham Scott duly pulled out the red card. Check out the best responses below!
That’s disgusting refereeing. Dwight Gayle is a striker! If he’s not going for that ball then he’s not doing his job! Awful awful decision. What a farce football has become.#AVLWBA

Game ruined by refereeing, thought WBA should have had a penalty for the barge in the back by Abraham, then the red for Gayle incredibly harsh as he’s entitled to go for the ball#ASTWBA

Anyone who thinks Dwight Gayle should be sent off for that is absolutely deluded. Game has gone soft.

Dwight Gayle has got to go for that ball there, poor sending off I think

For me Dwight Gayle has every right to go for that ball, maybe that’s bias, but if he doesn’t go for it then Albion fans would have a go that we’re behind and he doesn’t try 🤷🏻♀️#wbafc

Very harsh red that on Dwight Gayle. Promotion on the line, you want your striker going for that.#AVLWBA

Don’t know why people are saying it’s a daft challenge from#dwightgaylefor a start there was minimal contact, and secondary he has to go fir that ball! Shocking decision! Should get overturned that but it’s 2 yellows so it won’t. Terrible#villa#WestBrom#Playoffs2019
