Liverpool vs Wolves: 3 key battles that could decide the outcome of this crucial fixture
Liverpool will be hoping for a miracle when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday – in what will be the final matchday of this Premier League season.
The Reds are currently trailing league leaders Manchester City by one point, meaning even a win against Wolves wouldn’t be enough for them to secure the title, unless the defending champions fail to win against Brighton & Hove Albion on the same day.
Meanwhile, here are three key battles that could shape Liverpool’s fate against the Wolves this weekend.
Divock Origi vs Conor Coady
Divock Origi will have a spring in his steps after starring in Liverpool’s incredible 4-0 win over Barcelona in midweek. The Belgian scored a brace and looked lively throughout the game.
And with Roberto Firmino ruled out through injury, Origi will once again be tasked with the responsibility of leading the Liverpool attack this weekend. His ability to create space coupled with his excellent hold-up play will allow his teammates to become more effective in the final third.
The onus will be on Conor Coady to prevent the Belgian from influencing the game this weekend. The Wolves’ defender is known for his doggedness at the back and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the physically astute Origi on Sunday.
Fabinho vs Ruben Neves
Liverpool’s midfield general Fabinho will be key as the Reds look to dominate the proceedings in this important fixture. The Brazilian international is known for his ability to disrupt the flow of the opposition, thanks to his tackling prowess.
In addition, he can also distribute the ball all around the pitch – making him the lynchpin of the Liverpool midfield. But, he will have to deal with the dynamic and gifted Ruben Neves this weekend.
Neves has emerged as a key player for Wolves since last season and his work ethic and willingness to create chances in the final third could make life difficult for Fabinho.
Virgil van Dijk vs Raul Jimenez
The tussle between Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Wolves forward Raul Jimenez is going to be a fascinating one. Both the players are equipped with immense physical attributes, especially van Dijk, who has been one of the best performing defenders in Europe this season.
But, his qualities will be put to the test against Jimenez, who has also impressed the onlookers with his incredible work-ethic and remarkable hold-up play. Much like Origi, the Mexican international will look to occupy the opposition defenders and create openings for his teammates.
That means it could be imperative for Liverpool to nullify Jimenez and there is no other defender better suited for that job than van Dijk – making this one of the most important personal duels in this encounter.
