JOSE MOURINHO knew the writing was on the wall at Manchester United but refused to resign, a message sent to close friends has revealed.
The 56-year-old wasdismissed onDecember 18 following the 3-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpoolat Anfield two days before.
And he reportedly told close confidants he knew he would be sacked by the Old Trafford hierarchy – but was willing to fight on.
The Daily Mailreport he told friends in a text message: “I’m done after this. But I’m not quitting.”
Refusing to hand in his notice won Mourinho a majority share of a £19.6million payout,as revealed by the club this month.
But that has been a small price to pay for the club as the move has led to them bouncing back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The interim boss has galvanised United since taking over, bringing the best out of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford among others and getting the team playing attacking football.
The 0-0 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s sideon Sunday extended the Norwegian’s domestic unbeaten run to 13 games – his only defeat coming against Paris Saint-Germain.
United were nine points adrift of the top four when Mourinho was sacked, but are now just one behind fourth place Arsenal in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
They travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night before hosting Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
